Poe 1952, Pt. 5

(Continued from Poe 1952, Pt. 4)

NIGHTMARE  2
"THE PIT AND THE PENDULUM"

Only a few months after the Doug Wildey version of "THE PIT AND THE PENDULUM" appeared in Youthful's BEWARE #10, another, much CLASSIER version appeared in NIGHTMARE #2Ziff-Davis was the company that bought out AMAZING STORIES in 1938, and published comic-books in the early 1950s, with SUPERMAN co-creator Jerry Siegel as their art director.  The company had many interests, in magazines, pulps, and even television, comics being a mere short-lived sideline.

This was the 5th comics adaptation of this story, following Charlton's YELLOWJACKET COMICS #3 (Nov'44), Gilberton's CLASSICS ILLUSTRATED #40 (Aug'47),  Marvel's SPELLBOUND #2 (Apr'52), and Youthful's BEWARE #10 (Jun'52).  This was the 3rd of 3 versions in 1952!  It makes you wonder what was in the water.

This particular adaptation was illustrated by Everett Raymond Kinstler, who went on to great fame as a portait artist.

Well, that was short!

It gets strange here.  After 2 issues, the numbering for NIGHTMARE continued for 1 more issue at St. John, another publisher, who apparently acquired the title from Ziff-Davis.  A year later, another St. John title, WEIRD HORRORS, after 9 issues, changed its name to NIGHTMARE.  After 4 issues (#10-13), the title changed its name again, to AMAZING GHOST STORIES, for its 3 final issues (#14-16), during which time it had 2 completely different logos.  (You can't make up stuff like this!!)  It was in #14 that the Kinstler version of "Pit And The Pendulum" was reprinted, only 2 years after its debut.

Malibu, a small publisher in the 1980s and early 90s that became successful enough for Marvel to buy them out (in order to SHUT THEM DOWN and eliminate some competition), published a 115-page one-shot reprint anthology that ressurected the Kinstler "Pit" again.
