Poe 1947, Pt. 1

(Continued from Poe 1945, Pt. 4)

CLASSICS ILLUSTRATED  40
Mysteries by Edgar Allan Poe  /  "THE PIT AND THE PENDULUM"

Gilberton's 4th stab at Poe, in CLASSICS ILLUSTRATED #40, was the 1st all-Poe comic, containing 3 of his stories in a single issue.

First up:

"THE PIT AND THE PENDULUM"

This was the 2nd comics version of this story, following...
Charlton's YELLOWJACKET COMICS #3 (Nov'44)
     ...some 33 months earlier.

Each of the 3 stories in this issue had 1 page CUT from it in the reprints.  Yep, that reprehensible practice goes back at least that far.  What they actually did was cut certan panels, so that pages 2, 3 & 4 became pages 2 & 3, and everything after that the page number was adjusted by 1.  OY.  Oh well, I'm just glad I can read 'em at all right now.  I wonder if the current license owner is doing "UNCUT" versions in the newest editions?  Somebody should.

Fortunately, the scans I found came from 2 different websites.  The original version was smaller scans, and had the last page missing.  The reprint was larger scans, but had the last page intact.  So I'm gonna combine them to get the "full" story, as I tried to do with the Jesse Marsh "20,000 LEAGUES" earlier this year.

Cover artist Henry C. Kiefer did a lot of adaptations for Gilberton, including
Jules Verne's "20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA".

(This page was originally set up on Monday, October 13, 2014.  I'm moving it to a new page so it will be easier to make changes in the future.)

ENJOY!

Some time after setting this story up, I ran across Fritz Eichenberg's 1944 Poe illustrations.  It's quite clear that 3 years later, August M. Froelich SWIPED his "Pit And The Pendulum" illustration for the 2nd panel on page 2.
