Poe 1975, Pt. 2

(Continued from Poe 1975, Pt. 1)

CREEPY  69
"THE PIT AND THE PENDULUM"

And then-- it HAPPENED!

A mere 2 months after Warren did Richard Corben's version of "The Raven"-- editor Bill DuBay put together the first of 2 ALL-POE issues of CREEPY!  In one fell swoop, Warren essentially blew Skywald completely out of the water.

CREEPY #69, and the follow-up issue CREEPY #70 (2 months later) each featured 6 POE stories apiece.  Given the level of talent involved, one could say this effectively put the final nail in Skywald's coffin.

First up...

     "THE PIT AND THE PENDULUM".

This was no less than the 11th version of this, following...
Charlton's YELLOWJACKET COMICS #3 (Nov'44),
Gilberton's CLASSICS ILLUSTRATED #40 (Aug'47),
Marvel's SPELLBOUND #2 (Apr'52),
Youthful's BEWARE #10 (Jun'52),
Ziff-Davis's NIGHTMARE #2 (Fall'52),
Continental's CLASSICOS DE TERROR #9 (1960),
Co-Operative's SUNDAY EXTRA (Apr.66),
Temporae's EL MONJE LOCO #40 (Sep 4, 1968),
Skywald's SCREAM #2 (Oct'73),  and
De La Parra's MINI TERROR #430 (Jan 15, 1975)
Given all that, this one may be one of the most STUNNING to date!

Kicking off this issue's stellar array of talent is Jose Ortiz, who I've seen do countless stories for Warren, as well as the 3rd SABRE storyline with writer Don McGregor.

Oh, by the way-- this is the 9th out of 26 Warren POE adaptations!!

This version of the story has proven so popular, it has been reprinted several times-- starting with this Spanish anthology series...

A year later, the German edition only included 10 of the 15 stories, and assembled those in a completely different order!

A sample page of the story in German!
Semic Press was at one point the largest comics publisher in Sweden.  Here they did a "CREEPY SPECIAL" that reprinted 15 Warren POE stories from 1965-1976.  Oddly enough, the cover was a reprint of one that had been used by another publisher on an all-Richard Corben collection!

I'm afraid I have no idea of the date of this, but here's an anthology from Germany that's already had more than 1,000 issues, many of them reprinting stories from Gold Key.

GESPENSTER GESCHICHTEN  737

Now this is just idiotic.  This collection has no less than 12 POE stories in it... but instead of using one of the 2 POE covers available (CREEPY #69, 70), they use this one...
