Poe 1944, Pt. 1

(Continued from Poe 1944, Pt. 2)

CLASSIC COMICS  21
"THE MURDERS IN THE RUE MORGUE"

There have always been, for me, 4 "classic" writers of the 19th Century whose work I've admired, mostly in film adaptations, but also in the original texts, and sometimes, in comic-books.  They are Jules Verne, H.G. Wells, Arthur Conan Doyle, and Edgar Allan Poe.

Not unexpectedly, Gilberton's CLASSIC COMICS contains the earliest Poe comics adaptations I've been able to find. Following 2 poems, the first adaptation of one of his short stories appeared in the 21st issue-- 7 issue before Jules Verne!  In this case, his work shared the comic with 2 other authors-- Arthur Conan Doyle, and Guy de Maupassant.

When I started this project, I had not yet found this complete story online, but set up this page anyway, to keep things "organized", and to leave room for further expansion.  Diligence has paid off!

The only downside is, I found scans of a reprint--
which is MISSING 1 page of the story. Oh well!

Edgar Allan Poe

1880-1949     1950-1959     1960-1969     1970-1974     1975-1979     1980-1984

1985-1989     1990-1994     1995-1999     2000-2004     2005-2009     2010-2014

2015-2019    2020-2024.

I've already done a lot of work on this blog related to Jules Verne, and still have a lot to go.  I was initially hoping to exhaust anything Verne related before moving on, and possibly go on to H.G. Wells next... but I've decided to go with Poe instead. I don't think Poe gets as much respect in comics as the others, if only because his work consists of short stories and poems, rather than novels.  For a lot of years, you just don't see many magazine covers focusing on Poe, unless it's a collection of several of his short stories in one place.  But as I've discovered, there have been a LOT of Poe adaptations in comics... and I plan to take a look at as many of them as I can!
