Poe 1976, Pt. 2

(Continued from Poe 1976, Pt. 1)

VAMPIRELLA  49
"THE OBLONG BOX"

2 months after CREEPY #76, the next Warren POE adaptation appeared.
Apart from EERIE #11 (Sep'67), #12 (Nov'67) and #20 (Mar'69), and a number
of reprints, all the Warren adaptations had appeared in CREEPY.  Until now.

Inexplicably, the last 3 remaining POE stories appeared in other magazines.
2 of them including the one I'm presenting here, turned up in VAMPIRELLA.  Which was very odd, considering most stories in that magazine tended to
involve sexy, beautiful women.  Why the two that appeared in the magazine
did so, is a mystery to me.

The story in question here was...

     "THE OBLONG BOX".

This was the 3rd comics version of this story, following...
McComb's CROWN COMICS #1 (Spring'45), and
Skywald's SCREAM #4 (Feb'74)
     ...the latter, 25 months earlier.

Art this time is by Isidro Mones.  I feel, by a wide margin, that this is the most stunning version of this story to date.  This was his 3rd of 3 POE adaptations.

The cover is by one of my favorites, Enrich.  Along with Frank Frazetta and Sanjulian, I consider him one of the top 3 Warren horror comics cover artists.

As we enter the home stretch...
this is the 23rd out of 26 Warren POE adaptations!!

CREEPY  76
"THE IMP OF THE PERVERSE"

Although a number of reprints (foreign & domestic) appeared, it was another 5 months before the next new POE story turned up after CREEPY's all-science-fiction issue.

The story this time is the relatively-obscure...

     "THE IMP OF THE PERVERSE".

This was the 2nd comics version of this, after...
Taika's (unknown series and issue #) (1968)
     ...some 8 years earlier.

Art this time is by Luis Bermejo.  I remember him mostly as the original artist of the time-travelling adventure character, "The Rook".

This was his 2nd of 2 POE adaptations.

Continuing with the score...  this is the 22nd out of 26 Warren POE adaptations!!

Special thanks to Julio Machado for correctly identifying the cover artist.

CREEPY  70
"BERENICE"

2 months and 1 issue after Warren did an all-POE issue of CREEPY, they did another one, making for a total of 13 POE stories in only 5 months from them!  It blows my mind to think that in all the years I've been a fan of Warren's output, I was never aware of these issues-- and never had them in my collection.  Well, at least thanks to the internet, I have finally been able to read their contents-- and, share them with whoever is reading this blog!

We now come to the 6th and final story in CREEPY #70...

     "BERENICE".

This was the 7th comics version of this, following...
Outubro's CLASSICOS OF TERROR #8 (1962),
Warren's EERIE #11 (Sep'67),
Taika's ALBUM CLASSICOS DE TERROR #6 (1968),
Populares' EL MONJE LOCO #74 (April 30, 1969),
Vilmar's PANICO #21 (May'74), and
Skywald's SCREAM #7 (Jul'74),
...the latter some 9 months earlier.

This was also the 3rd of 5 POE stories that Warren had done in the late 60s that they wound up doing new versions of in the 70s.  (Which may explain why no one has EVER done a truly "complete" set of Warren POE stories in any one place... until this blog!)  Strangely enough, all 3 stories from EERIE were later redone (and they seem to be often ignored when it comes to reprint collections).

Art this time is by Isidro Mones.  This was his 2nd of 3 POE adaptations.

Once more, for those keeping score...  this is the 20th out of 26 Warren POE adaptations!!

CREEPY  70
"A DESCENT INTO THE MAELSTROM"

2 months and 1 issue after Warren did an all-POE issue of CREEPY, they did another one, making for a total of 13 POE stories in only 5 months from them!  It blows my mind to think that in all the years I've been a fan of Warren's output, I was never aware of these issues-- and never had them in my collection.  Well, at least thanks to the internet, I have finally been able to read their contents-- and, share them with whoever is reading this blog!

Arriving now at the 5th and penultimate story in CREEPY #70...

     "A DESCENT INTO THE MAELSTROM".

This was the 4th comics version of this story, following...
Taika's ALBUM CLASSICOS DE TERROR #7 (1968),
San Paulo's IL GIORNALINO #43 (Oct'71), and
Skywald's PSYCHO #18 (May'74)
...the latter a mere 11 months earlier.

By this point, it seems Warren was intent on re-doing all the stories Skywald had done, perhaps to erase their memory even as Marvel's criminal manilpuation of their distribution had erased them from the newsstands.

Art this time is by Adolpho Usero Abellan.
This would be his only POE adaptation.

And again, for those still counting...  this is the 19th out of 26 Warren POE adaptations!!
