CREEPY 70
"SHADOW"
2 months and 1 issue after Warren did an all-POE issue of CREEPY, they did another one, making for a total of 13 POE stories in only 5 months from them! It blows my mind to think that in all the years I've been a fan of Warren's output, I was never aware of these issues-- and never had them in my collection. Well, at least thanks to the internet, I have finally been able to read their contents-- and, share them with whoever is reading this blog!
The 4th in CREEPY #70 was one that had only been done in comics once before... "SHADOW".
This was the 2nd comics version of this story, following...
Taika's A CRIPTA #1 (1968)
...some 7 years earlier.
As it happens, this adaptation also includes elements from "THE MASQUE OF THE RED DEATH", which had been done 12 times before. It was previously adapted in...
Marvel's ADVENTURES INTO WEIRD WORLDS #4 (Spring'52),
Charlton's THE THING #2 (Apr'52),
Continental's CLASSICOS DE TERROR #9 (1960),
Marvel's STRANGE TALES #83 (Apr'61),
Dell's THE MASQUE OF THE RED DEATH Movie Classic (Aug-Oct'64),
Warren's EERIE #12 (Nov'67),
Taika's ALBUM CLASSICOS DE TERROR #3 (1967),
Marvel's CHAMBER OF DARKNESS #2 (Dec'69),
Promethean's PROMETHEAN ENTERPRISES #2 (May'70),
Milano Libri's LINUS #91 (Oct'72),
Doncel's TRINCA EXTRA DE NAVIDAD (Dec'72), and
Skywald's PSYCHO #20 (Aug'74)
...the last, just 8 months earlier.
Returning for his 3rd of 3 POE adaptations for Warren was the unique stylist, Richard Corben. Unlike his fellow Warren artists, this would prove to be, in the long run, FAR from his final stab at the author's work.
Once again, for those counting... this is the 18th out of 26 Warren POE adaptations!!
