Poe 1975, Pt. 4

(Continued from Poe 1975, Pt. 3)

CREEPY  69
"THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER"

A mere 2 months after Warren did Richard Corben's version of "The Raven"-- editor Bill DuBay put together the first of 2 ALL-POE issues of CREEPY!  In one fell swoop, Warren essentially blew Skywald completely out of the water.

CREEPY #69, and the follow-up issue CREEPY #70 (2 months later) each featured 6 POE stories apiece.  Given the level of talent involved, one could say this effectively put the final nail in Skywald's coffin.

Now we come to that most popular of all POE stories...

"THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER".

This was the 18th version of this, following...
Charlton's YELLOWJACKET COMICS #4 (Dec'44),
Gilberton's CLASSICS ILLUSTRATED #40 (Aug'47),
Register & Tribune's THE SPIRIT (Aug'48),
EC's THE VAULT OF HORROR #13 (Jun-Jul'50),
Prize's BLACK MAGIC #28 (Jan-Feb'54),
EC's TERROR ILLUSTRATED #1 (Nov'Dec'55),
Taika's ALBUM CLASSICOS DE TERROR #5 (1967),
Serg's 3 HISTOIRES EXTRAORDINAIRES (1968),
Warren's EERIE #20 (Mar'69),
Milano Libri's LINUS #50 (May'69),

EDAR's MINI HORROR #132 (May'69),
Gino Sansoni's I CLASSICI A FUMETTI #17 (Sep'69),
Ibero Mundial's DOSSIER NEGRO #17 (Jul'70),
Populares' EL MONJE LOCO #143 (August 23, 1970),
Stowa Forlag's NOVA #2 (May'73),
Skywald's SCREAM #3 (Dec'73), and
Eerie's WEIRD Vol.8 #4 (Aug'74),
...the last one only 6 months earlier!

This was also the 1st of 5 POE stories that Warren had done in the late 60s that they wound up doing new versions of in the 70s.  (Which may explain why no one has EVER done a truly "complete" set of Warren POE stories in any one place... until this blog!)  Strangely enough, all 3 stories from EERIE were later redone (and they seem to be often ignored when it comes to reprint collections).

The artist this time around the artist is Santiago Martin Salvador.  I always felt his art was beautiful, but in a much more low-key fashion than most of his contemporaries.  Looking back, his work reminds me somewhat of Reed Crandall's, only carried to the next level.

This is the 11th out of 26 Warren POE adaptations!!

Beauitiful work... but I can't shake the feeling there should have been at least 1 more page (with that last page should have been split up into 2 for more visdual impact).  Ah well.

So far, this has only been reprinted slightly more than the Tom Sutton version.

Here we have the 1st of 5 reprint collections using the same cover (more or less).  This book collects 15 various Warren POE stories by a variety of artists, from from 1965-1976.  Ironically, while the cover clearly illustrates "The Fall Of The House Of Usher", it was done for Richard Corben's version of the story, not Martin Salvador's-- which IS in the collection, while Corben's had not been published yet at the time this collection came out!

Semic Press was at one point the largest comics publisher in Sweden.  Their eidion has the same 15 Warren POE stories from 1965-1976.  Again, the cover by Richard Corben was later used by another publisher on an all-Corben collection!
