ALBUM CLASSICOS DE TERROR 5
"A QUEDA DA CASA DE USHER"
(IN COLOR w/ English Translation)
Editora Continental / Outubro / Taika were 3 names used by the same small publisher in Brazil. The work of artists Jayme Cortez & Miguel Penteado, they produced some wonderful comics, many of them in the horror genre, each doing many gorgeous, stunning cover paintings!
I have discovered, between my own researches and the IMMENSE help of artist and fellow fan Toni Rodrigues, that Continental / Outubro / Taika during their run produced at least 25 POE adaptations-- MORE than Skywald or Warren !! It's my intention to compile, clean up, TRANSLATE and COLOR every one of these for my POE blog project!!
14th in line, another version of that popular favorite...
"THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER"
This was the 7th comics adaptation of the story, following...
Charlton's YELLOWJACKET COMICS #4 (Dec'44),
Gilberton's CLASSICS ILLUSTRATED #40 (Aug'47),
Register & Tribune's THE SPIRIT (Aug'47),
EC's THE VAULT OF HORROR #13 (Jun-Jul'50),
Prize's BLACK MAGIC #28 (Jan'Feb'54), and
EC's TERROR ILLUSTRATED #1 (Nov'Dec'55),
...the last one 12 years earlier!
I first ran across the cover of this at the Mercado Livre site, Brazil's "answer" to eBay. The "product descriptions" listed 3 stories and 3 artists-- and what grabbed my attention was that the 3rd story listed was "USHER". Some time later, this was one of 8 POE stories that Toni Rodrigues e-mailed me hi-res scans of, all at the same time! Wow.
And what a beauty the cover is. The covers on these books remind me of many of the covers that graced Gold Key's horror books in the 60s. In this case, the subject matter was exactly the kind of thing that got EC Comics publisher William Gaines in trouble in the 1950s with the Senate investigative committee that was looking into "comic-books and juvenile delinquency".
Nico Rosso was one of the most high-profile artists in his time, working for many publishers and doing both cover paintings and interior stories. This is only one of his MANY painted covers.
As for the story, the artist this time is Osvaldo Talo. He has a rather simple, "clean" style coupled with an excellent visual storytelling sense. Also, it seems he did more POE adaptations than any other artist in Brazil! His style really lends itself to COLOR.
This is his 4th of 5 POE adaptations.
