Poe 1970, Pt. 5

(Continued from Poe 1970, Pt. 4)

DOSSIER NEGRO  16
"LA CAIDA DE LA CASA USHER"
     (IN COLOR  w/ English Translation)

Ibero Mundial De Ediciones was the work of publisher & editor José María Arman Corbera, located in Barcelona, Spain, from 1959 to 1978.  In their time they did romance, comedy, horror & science-fiction.

DOSSIER NEGRO was a B&W horror anthology in the style of Warren's CREEPY and others, which began in 1968.

Among its contents were at least 3 Poe adaptations.  First up:

"THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER"

This was the 13th comics version of this story, following...
Charlton's YELLOWJACKET COMICS #4 (Dec'44),
Gilberton's CLASSICS ILLUSTRATED #40 (Aug'47),
Register & Tribune's THE SPIRIT (Aug'48),
EC's THE VAULT OF HORROR #13 (Jun-Jul'50),
Prize's BLACK MAGIC #28 (Jan-Feb'54),
EC's TERROR ILLUSTRATED #1 (Nov'Dec'55),
Taika's ALBUM CLASSICOS DE TERROR #5 (1967),
Serg's 3 HISTOIRES EXTRAORDINAIRES (1968),
Warren's EERIE #20 (Mar'69),
Milano Libri Edizioni's LINUS #50 (May'69),

EDAR's MINI TERROR #132 (May'69), and
Gino Sansoni's I CLASSICI A FUMETTI #17 (Sep'69),
...the previous one 10 months earlier!

I first ran across this at the Tierra La Larrabeau blog on December 15, 2016.  I've been looking forward to tackling it ever since, and probably would have gotten to it much earlier, except for the fact that SO MANY earlier items just kept turning up for me to add to the project.

The art is by Miguel Gomez Esteban.  The career of this Spanish artist was indeed short (he died at the age of 38), but that didn't prevent him from becoming one of the most sought after artists by both romance and terror publications.  Hence his omnipresence in the most popular romantic (such as "Claro de Luna" or "Seleccion Romantica") and terror ("Dossier Negro", "Vampus", "Rufus") novels and comics.  (Info from the Comic Art Fans site.)

This was his 1st of 2 POE stories.

It never fails to amaze me how many foreign artists have been drawn to illustrate Poe, far more than in his native United States.

This particular adaptation of "USHER" adds a back-story to the Madeleine character I haven't seen in any other version.  You'll see-- ENJOY!
