"THE MASQUE OF THE RED DEATH"

Promethean Enterprises was the work of Jim Vadeboncoeur Jr., Al Devoren and Bud Plant.  One of countless amateur fanzines, it featured a wild variety of material, all outside the constrictions of established publishers, the Comics Code, or traditional distribution.

Among the contents was an illustrated story version of this Poe classic:

     "THE MASQUE OF THE RED DEATH"

I first ran across information about this at the ComicsJoint site.  After spending some time searching online for a copy, I found that the 2nd issue was consistently the only one that was out of my price range.

Then on 5-12-2020, Canadian comics fan Richard Gagnon came to the rescue by sending me a link to the Library Genesis site, where there are a huge number of decent-sized scans of extremely-rare fanzines posted for free in their entirety!  I immediately went thru the site, downloaded the scans I wanted, and have been waiting ever since to begn processing them and setting this blog page up.

     This was the 9th comics version of this, following...
Marvel's ADVENTURES INTO WEIRD WORLDS #4 (Spring'52),
Charlton's THE THING #2 (Apr'52),
Continental's CLASSICOS DE TERROR #9 (1960),
Marvel's STRANGE TALES #83 (Apr'61),
Dell's THE MASQUE OF THE RED DEATH Movie Classic (Aug-Oct'64),
Warren's EERIE #12 (Nov'67),
Taika's ALBUM CLASSICOS DE TERROR #3 (1967),
Marvel's CHAMBER OF DARKNESS #2 (Dec'69),  and
     ...the last one 5 months earlier.

I felt both the highly-detailed line art and the authentic Poe text were not well-suited on the actual fanzine pages.  So, As I'd done with the Jesse Marsh "20,000 LEAGUES", I decided to RE-FORMAT the pages for the blog!  This is actually very much in the tradition of various newspaper comic-strips over the decades.
