Poe 1974, Pt. 9

(Continued from Poe 1974, Pt. 8)

SCREAM  7
"BERENICE"

Skywald Publications was the work of Sol Brodsky & Israel Waldman.  While they had a small run of color comics designed to imitate Marvel, their biggest output and claim to fame were their B&W "Horror-Mood" magazines, done very much in the mode of James Warren's CREEPY and EERIE.

Al Hewetson, a writer & editor, soon joined the company and eventually became full editor when Brodsky returned to MarvelHewetson determined to give Skywald's horror line a more "literate" feel than Warren's had, resulting in, among other things, no less than 19 Edgar Allan Poe adaptations between 1972-75.

Here we come to the 11th of these...

     "BERENICE".

This was the 7th comics version of this, following...
Outubro's CLASSICOS OF TERROR #24 (1960),
Warren's EERIE #11 (Sep'67),
Taika's ALBUM CLASSICOS DE TERROR # 6 (1968),
Populares' EL MONJE LOCO #74 (April 30, 1969), and
Vilmar' PANICO #21 (1973),
...the last only 2 months earlier.

The art this time was by Ricardo Villamonte, who apparently came from somewhere in South America.  I mostly know him from work he did as an inker for both Marvel and DC.  This was his 2nd of 5 POE adaptations for Skywald.

Cover artist Manuel "Brea" Rodriguez did a TON of covers for Spanish horror mags.

Like many American publishers, Skywald stories were reprinted by a wide
variety of publishers overseas, usually in a jumbled, chaotic, haphazard way.
Semic in Finland was one of those publishers...

Eternity Comics, for a few years, was a very successful small publisher, who split their output between a number of original series, licensed series, and reprints of old comics.  This included quite of few of the Poe stories from Skywald!  "Berenice" was reprinted here...
