Poe 1966, Pt. 1

(Continued from Poe 1965, Pt. 9)

SUNDAY CITIZEN:  SUNDAY EXTRA
The Greatest Stories of All Time...

(IN COLOR)

REYNOLD'S WEEKLY NEWSPAPER
was a Sunday newspaper based in London, founded in 1850 by George W. M. Reynolds, its first editor.

In 1894, the paper was bought by Henry Dalziel and, in 1924, was retitled REYNOLD'S ILLUSTRATED NEWS.  In 1929, the paper was acquired by the Co-operative Press, linked to the Co-operative Party, and, in 1936, its title was shortened to REYNOLD'S NEWS.

In 1944, it was retitled again, this time as REYNOLD'S NEWS AND SUNDAY CITIZEN.  During the 1950s, it began to make a loss, and was relaunched in 1962 as a tabloid, the SUNDAY CITIZEN, but the final issue was published on June 18, 1967.

The slogan of the SUNDAY CITIZEN, a democratic socialist weekly newspaper, was "The government of the people by the people".  The SUNDAY EXTRA was a 4-page pullout "for the young and all the young at heart" a free comic supplement which contained comic strips by the likes of John Burns and Frank Langford.
(info from  “The Frank Bellamy Checklist Website and Blog”)

Among the "classics" stories crammed into a single full newspaper page apiece, were at least 2 POE stories.  So far, 1 of them has turned up online.

Frank Bellamy was known for "innovative graphic effects and sophisticated use of colour", and in the dynamic manner in which his art "broke out of the then-traditional grid system".  Among his works were "Heroes Of Spartan", "Fraser of Africa" and "Dan Dare" for the EAGLE comic, "Garth" for THE DAILY MIRROR, as well as "Thunderbirds" and "Captain Scarlet" for TV CENTURY 21.

The sole scan I was able to find online was usable, but not big enough to justify or enable a really exhasutive or satisfying restoration job.  I'm posting it at the exact size I found it at, with the edges trimmed off and some minor clean-up to improve its appearance.  I redid the text to make it readable on the blog!

ENJOY!
