Poe 1954, Pt. 2

(Continued from Poe 1954, Pt. 1A)

NIGHTMARE  11
"HOP FROG"

St. John Publications was a small publisher that was notable for several "firsts":  the 1st 3-D comic (THREE DIMENSIONAL COMICS), the 1st movie-comedian tie-in series (ABBOTT AND COSTELO COMICS), and the 1st graphic novel (IT RHYMES WITH LUST).

NIGHTMARE was a title the company picked up and continued from Ziff-Davis.  Initially, they did a 3rd issue after Ziff-Davis had stopped with just 2.  However, a completely different series from St. John, WEIRD HORRORS, after running 9 issues, had its name changed to NIGHTMARE, starting with its 10th issue.  It was a common practice for companies to save money on 2nd-class postal permits by changing the names of existing series.  After 4 issues, the "new" NIGHTMARE had its name changed again, to AMAZING GHOST STORIES.  It ran for 3 issues under this name before finally coming to and end with its 16th issue.  As you can imagine, this sort of thing has no doubt caused endless confusion for collectors over the years.

The St. John NIGHTMARE featured Poe stories in 2 of its issues-- #11 and #12.  The first of these was an adaptation of "HOP-FROG".  Special thanks to 2 different people, Steve Thompson & "Smurfswacker", for identifying the artist!
