Gilberton's 5th and final foray into Poe was also their 2nd all-Poe issue.

First up...

"THE GOLD BUG"

Oddly enough, this was the very 1st Poe story I ever read in the original text, in a high school English class reading book. With it being more "adventure story" than "horror" story, it's proven more popular with educator types.

     This was the 3rd comics version of this story, following...
Manuel Lainez' TIT-BITS #1991 (Aug'47), and
David C. Cook's SUNDAY PIX #1-14 (May 1-Jul 31, 1949)
     ...2 years earlier.

The art is by Alex Blum.  This was his 2nd of 2 POE adaptations.

It's perhaps fitting that after this issue, Gilberton never tackled Poe again, and the author's works instead began appearing with never-ending frequency in other company's "horror" books.

In 1982, Prentice Hall College Div. reprinted the story as part of their REGENTS ILLUSTRATED CLASSICS series:  THE GOLD BUG and OTHER TALES.  Unfortunately, information on this has proven difficult to track down.
