Poe 1968, Pt. 7

(Continued from Poe 1968, Pt. 6)

ALBUM CLASSICOS DE TERROR  7
"O CORACAO DENUNCIADOR"

(IN COLOR  w/ English Translation  /  Conclusion)
          REMASTERED

Editora Continental / Outubro / Taika were 3 names used by the same small publisher in Brazil.  The work of artists Jayme Cortez & Miguel Penteado, they produced some wonderful comics, many of them in the horror genre, each doing many gorgeous, stunning cover paintings!

I have discovered, between my own researches and the IMMENSE help of artist and fellow fan Toni Rodrigues, that Continental / Outubro / Taika during their run produced at least 25 POE adaptations-- MORE than Skywald or Warren !!  It's my intention to compile, clean up, TRANSLATE and COLOR every one of these for my POE blog project!!

ALBUM CLASSICOS DE TERROR #7, as it turns out, and not counting issue-long stories, was the 4th ALL-POE comic anthology, following Gilberton's CLASSICS ILLUSTRATED #40 (Aug'47), CLASSICS ILLUSTRATED #84 (Jun'51), and Dell's Poe's TALES OF TERROR (Feb'63), the last one 4 years earlier.  The next such book would be Editions Serg's 3 HISTOIRES EXTRAORDINAIRES (1968), created that same year (though possibly not actually published until 1973), followed by Gino Sansoni Editore's I CLASSICI A FUMETTI #17 (Sep'69), some 2 years later, followed by until Warren's CREEPY #69 (Feb'75), some 5-1/2 years after that!

Second up, and 18th in line from the publisher, that perennial favorite...

     "THE TELL-TALE HEART"

This was the 8th comics version of this story, following...
Charlton's YELLOWJACKET COMICS #6 (Dec'45),
EC's THE HAUNT OF FEAR #15 [1] (May-Jun'50),
Gilberton's CLASSICS ILLUSTRATED #84 (Jun'51),
EC's SHOCK SUSPENSTORIES #8 (Apr-May'53),
EC's THE HAUNT OF FEAR #20 (Jul-Aug'53),
Charlton's WIN A PRIZE #1 (Feb'55), and
Warren's CREEPY #3 (Jun'65),
.....the last some 2 years earlier.

This was one of 8 POE stories that Toni Rodrigues e-mailed me hi-res scans of, all at the same!  I first became aware of this story when I saw it listed on the cover of a reprint from the 70s, but it took a few months before I found out (thanks to Toni) where it originally appeared, and who did it.

The art this time is by Nico Rosso, one of the most prolific comics artists in Brazil, responsible for a multitude of interior stories, but perhaps best known as "the" DRACULA artist in the 1960s. He also did an enormous number of full-color painted covers-- including the one on this issue.

After having done so many POE comics adaptations by now, it takes a lot to impress me.  One good look at the pages you're about to read, and my mind was blown.  Unlike the previous MESS, there is so much line detail here, and every line is so sharp, so clean, so STRAIGHT.  I think I'd have been terrified, attempting to add COLOR to this, if I hadn't already tackled something similar with Gedeone Malagola's "AMONTILLADO".

This was Rosso's 2nd of 4 POE adaptations!  ENJOY!

REPRINTS

I first became aware of this story via this cover.  However, when someone posted the comic online for sale at the Mercado Livre site in June 2016, the list of stories on the sale page included 3 POE stories-- "O BARRIL DE AMONTILLADO""MORELLA", and "THE BLACK CAT" --but not "O CORACAO DENUNCIADOR".  How can that be?  An oversite, or a mistake on the cover itself?  (It's been known to happen.)
