Poe 1968, Pt. 16

(Continued from Poe 1968, Pt. 15)

A CRIPTA  2
"O CORVO"

     (Original English Text)

Editora Continental / Outubro / Taika were 3 names used by the same small publisher in Brazil.  The work of artists Jayme Cortez & Miguel Penteado, they produced some wonderful comics, many of them in the horror genre, each doing many gorgeous, stunning cover paintings!

I have discovered, between my own researches and the IMMENSE help of artist and fellow fan Toni Rodrigues, that Continental / Outubro / Taika during their run produced at least 25 POE adaptations-- more than Skywald or Warren !!  It's my intention to compile, clean up, TRANSLATE and COLOR every one of these for my POE blog project!!  (Well, with exceptions.)

25th in line...

     "THE RAVEN"

This was the 5th version of this, following
EC's MAD #9 (Feb-Mar'54),
EC's MAD #46 (Apr'59),
EC's MAD #55 (Jun'60), and
Dell's THE RAVEN Movie Classic (Sep'63),
...the last one some 4 years earlier.

At this point, there had been 3 comedy versions of this classic poem done in comics, and 1 movie adaptation.  Oddly enough, this time, we get a "straight" illustrated version.  Took long enough!

The art this time is by Nico Rosso, one of the most prolific comics artists in Brazil, responsible for a multitude of interior stories, but perhaps best known as "the" DRACULA artist in the 1960s. He also did an enormous number of full-color painted covers.  As with the previous adaptation, "SHADOW", his art this time is unlike anything else I've ever seen from him.

This is his 4th of 4 POE adaptations.

Writer R.F. Lucchetti adapted the poem into Portugese... however, because this is a poem, not a short story, I felt it best if I simply used Poe's original text verbatim.
