Poe 1977, Pt. 4

(Continued from Poe 1977, Pt. 3)

MARVEL CLASSIC COMICS  28
"THE CASK OF AMONTILLADO"

One more with the first all-POE comic since CREEPY #70.

Marvel Comics (at times in its early history sometimes referred to as Timely or Atlas) was always a 2nd-level publisher-- somewhere in the middle as far as quality was concerned-- whose specialty was flooding the market with imitations of whatever was then currently popular.

Bizarrely enough, the 3rd story in MCC #28 had had a sequel done for it at Marvel, before the actual story.  Thanks to Don McGregor, this time the original story itself was finally being done.

Another perrenial favorite, the story in question, of course, is...
     "THE CASK OF AMONTILLADO".

This was the 13th comics version of this story, following...
EC's CRIME SUSPENSTORIES #3 (Feb-Mar'51),
Gilberton's CLASSICS ILLUSTRATED #84 (Jun'51),
Ziff-Davis' FANTASTIC Vol.1 #3 (Nov'Dec'52),
Editora Continental's CLASSICOS DE TERROR #1 (1960),
Dell's Movie Classic TALES OF TERROR (Feb'63),
Warren's CREEPY #6 (Dec'65),
Editora Taika's ALBUM CLASSICS DE TERROR #4 (1967),
O Livreiro's TERROR ILUSTRADO #1 (1970),
Mundial De Ediciones' MAESTROS DEL TERROR #1 (1970),
Eerie Publications' TERROR TALES v.6 #1 (Feb'74),
Skywald's SCREAM #5 (Apr'74),
Warren's CREEPY #70 (Apr'75),
and Novaro's CUENTOS DE EDGAR ALLAN POE (1975)
...the last one, about 2 years earlier.

As with the 2 previous stories, the writer, Don McGregor, did the layouts himself.  Unlike the other 2, the finished art this time was not by someone from the Phillipines-- but instead, surprisingly, by someone making their professional comics debut-- Michael Golden!

I've long found Golden to have one of the most BIZARRE-looking pencilling styles I've ever seen in "mainstream" comics, and I suppose it shouldn't be surprising that he made his debut in a "horror" story. He's done a wild variety of types of stories in his time, including Man-Bat, G.I. JOE, and the first year of MICRONAUTS, the series he probably really made his mark in the business on.  Enjoy!

These stories, as far as I know, have never been reprinted in America.
But they have been at least twice, overseas...
