TALES OF VOODOO v5 4
"MS. FOUND IN A BOTTLE"
Eerie Publications was one of the companies set up by el cheapo schlockmeister Myron Fass (infamously of M.F. Enterprises, who put out the android "Captain Marvel" who yelled "SPLIT!" --and then did). While clearly meant to imitate and compete with the glorious James Warren B&W horror comics magazines (CREEPY, EERIE, etc.), the byword for these was "tacky". On every level. Instead of trying to raise the bar on quality of art and writing, these seem more aimed at the lowest possible dominator, kids who could take a perverse pleasure in being able to read shocking, brutally violent stuff that made the worst excesses of the early-1950s seem tame by comparison.
I don't think I actually have even a single one of these in my entire collection. In fact, frankly, I'm surprised that a POE story even turned up in any of them. But according to my research, it did. This is another instance where, at the time I set this page up, all I had was a cover... but, thanks to a fellow fan, before too long I found myself in the posession of a complete set of scans! Don't you just love the internet?
The story in question is the relatively obscure...
"MS. FOUND IN A BOTTLE".
This was the 4th comics version of the story, following...
Youthful's CHILLING TALES #17 (Oct'53),
Taika's ALBUM CLASSICOS DE TERROR #3 (1967), and
Ibero Mundial's MAESTROS DEL TERROR #5 (1970).
In this case, it's actually an "illustrated story", not a "comic"... but what the HELL!
