Poe 1979, Pt. 3

(Continued from Poe 1979, Pt. 2)

EL PENDULO  2
"WILLIAM WILSON"
     (English translation)

So, did you think Jeff Bonivert's art was really wild and off-the-wall?
Wait until you see this...

I've been finding more and more foreign POE comics adaptations, many of them that have NEVER been published in America-- or even in English!  I've made it my goal to correct that situation.

Ediciones de la Urraca  ("Editions of the Magpie") was an Argentina publisher from 1974-2001, the work of AndrĂ©s Cascioli.  One of his magazines was EL PENDULO  ("The Pendulum"), which ran from 1979-91.

The 2nd issue featured one of the less-popular POE stories...
     "WILLIAM WILSON".

This was the 3rd comics version of this story, following...
Taika's ALBUM CLASSICOS DE TERROR #6 (1968), and
Skywald's NIGHTMARE #19 (Jun'74)
...the latter some 5 years earlier.

Alberto Breccia was a cartoonist who was born in Uruguay, at a young age moved to Argentina, and who really started to make headway in his career by being published in Italy.  This was the 2nd of 6 POE adaptations he did.  While his first was originally published in Italy, his 2nd was published in his homeland, Argentina.

Like the previous one, I believe this has never been translated into English... UNTIL NOW.  Unlike the previous one, which was done in a rather bizarre but still "traditional" line-art style, his other 5 POEs were all done as full-color paintings, and using some of the WEIRDEST, most AVANT-GARDE stylings I have ever seen.  Let me put it this way:  the following pages probably look less as home in a comics magazine than they would in New York's "Museum Of Modern Art".

ENJOY-- if you can!!!

Despite an absolute minimum of text, this one somehow was more difficult than usual to do a sensible translation of.  For the death scene, page 10, panel 3, there was not only too much text to fit in the available space, but what came out of the translator MADE NO SENSE.  So, once again (as I did with the finale of the Luiz Saidenberg "Black Cat"), I went straight to the original story and QUOTED Poe's text vebatim.

Poe 1979, Pt. 2

(Continued from Poe 1979, Pt. 1)

CREEPY  110
"THE CLOCKMAKER"   ("THE TELL-TALE HEART")

41 months after VAMPIRELLA #49 (3-1/2 years!), the next Warren POE adaptation finally appeared.  I wonder what took them so long?

After an inexplicable appearance in VAMPI (when that story didn't even involve anything sexy), the next one turned up back in its regular, most logical home, CREEPY.  This story is notable for a few points.  For one thing, they changed the name for no apparent reason, as virtually nothing about this could be said to be any kind of "loose" adaptation.  Second, both the writer and artist involved were MIS-credited in the magazine.  And third...  this was the 5th time Warren had RE-done a story they'd already done in the late 60s.  That's 5 out of 6, with the only odd one out being Reed Crandall's "Hop-Frog".

The story this time out, all too obviously, is that perrennial favorite...
     "THE TELL-TALE HEART".  Yes-- AGAIN.

This was the 19th comics version of this story, following...
Charlton's YELLOWJACKET COMICS #6 (Dec'45),
EC's THE HAUNT OF FEAR #15 [1] (May-Jun'50),
Gilberton's CLASSICS ILLUSTRATED #84 (Jun'51),
EC's SHOCK SUSPENSTORIES #8 (Apr-May'53),
EC's THE HAUNT OF FEAR #20 (Jul-Aug'53),
Charlton's WIN A PRIZE #1 (Feb'55),
Warren's CREEPY #3 (Jun'65),
Outubro's ALBUM CLASSICOS DE TERROR #7 (1968),
Gino Sansoni's I CLASSICI A FUMETTI #17 (Sep'69),
Marvel's CHAMBER OF DARKNESS #3 (Feb'70),

Mundial
's MAESTROS DEL TERROR #5 (1970),
Skywald's SCREAM #8 (Aug'74),
Marvel's CRAZY #7 (Oct'74),
Milano Libre's ALTER LINUS #9 (Sep'75),
Novaro's CUENTOS DE EDGAR ALLAN POE (1975),
Marvel's MARVEL CLASSICS COMICS #28 (May'77),
Vecchi's SPEKTRO #2 (Aug'77), and
Moby Books' TALES OF MYSTERY AND TERROR (Jan'79)
...the last one 7 months earlier!

I might have missed this one entirely, if I hadn't-- get this-- run across a Spanish version of it posted online at the Entrecomics site.  Someone there pointed out how it was clearly based on "THE TELL-TALE HEART", and I suddenly realized
I had the story in my collection and had read it when it first came out.  Good thing, I didn't have to do an English translation of a story that was (presumably) originally published in English.

The artist this time is Jesus Blasco.  Inexplicably, both he and writer Bob Toomey had been mis-credited in the magazine, Toomey as "Gary Null" and Blasco as "J. Blasquez".  One can infer that Warren as a publishing company was starting to fall apart right there and then, with this sort of thing going on.

Ironically, the letters page in that very issue made note of the fact that an earlier issue had ALL the credits missing...
Interestingly enough, I just watched a short Spanish film (45 min.) titled "El Corazon Delator" from 1960, in which the old man is also a clock-maker.  This makes me suspect that the Toomey / Blasco version was inspired by that film!

As we continue in the home stretch...
this is the 24th out of 26 Warren POE adaptations!!

Although there would be 2 more POE stories from Warren,
this was the FINAL one in CREEPY.

Poe 1979, Pt. 1

(Continued from Poe 1978, Pt. 1)

STAR*REACH  17
"THE RAVEN"

Star*Reach was both a publishing company and a magazine, the work of comics writer-turned artists' agent Mike Friedrich.  While he worked for a time in the early 70s at Marvel Comics, his efforts outside that company far out-stripped anything most fans tend to remember him for.

Which brings us to one of the strangest items yet in this entire POE project...

     "THE RAVEN"

This was the 18th version of this, following...
Harper's THE RAVEN (1880),
E.P. Dutton's THE RAVEN (1883),
Harper & Brothers' THE RAVEN (1884),
Harwell-Evans' THE RAVEN (1906),
Reilly & Britton's THE RAVEN (1910),
Dodd, Mead & Company's THE RAVEN (1930),
EC's MAD #9 (Feb-Mar'54),
EC's MAD #46 (Apr'59),
EC's MAD #55 (Jun'60),
Dell's THE RAVEN Movie Classic (Sep'63),

Taika's A CRIPTA #2 (1968),
EC's MAD #125 (Mar'69),
Warren's CREEPY #67 (Dec'74),
Skywald's SCREAM #11 (Mar'75),
EC's MAD #181 (Mar'76), and
Charlton's HAUNTED #28 (Apr'76)
...the last one a little over 3 years earlier.

What could be more off-beat than Kurtzman & Elder, Drucker, or Ditko, you might ask?

Wait 'til you see the work of Jeff Bonivert...

(Continued from Poe 1977, Pt.11)

SPEKTRO  8
"A ADORMECIDA"   ("THE SLEEPER")
"O RETATO OVAL"  ("THE OVAL PORTRAIT")
    (Illustrated stories)

Editiora Vecchi was a Brazillian publisher founded in 1913 by Italian emigrant Arturo Vecchi.  They became known for their comics, including horror titles SOBRENATURAL, HISTORIAS DO ALEM, PESADELO, and...  SPEKTRO.

SPEKTRO ran from January 1977 to 1982, at its peak selling 40,000 copies an issue.  It began, oddly enough, with reprints of Gold Key's DR. SPEKTOR, but ran through those stories so quickly it soon expanded to reprinting Fawcett's Dr. Death and Dr. Mystery, and Charlton's Dr. Graves (I see a pattern here), as well as stories from Brazillian publisher Continental / Outubro / Taika's CLASSICOS DE TERROR.

I'll admit right here, detailed information about many Brazillian comics has been hard to track down, so that at the moment, I'm not entirely sure which stories, if any, are new to SPEKTRO, and which are reprints (and where they may have originally appeared).  However, I believe this was new in 1978; the "Illustrated" stories & poems do not appear to be of an earlier vintage.

This issue has 2 short subjects, so I decided to lump them together on a single page.

We start with "THE SLEEPER", a relatively obscure poem.  The artist is Cesar Lobo.  As I'm setting this page up, I've discovered at least 3 OTHER comics versions of this, although all of them were done around 3 decades later!  (By the way, I figured out that the 2nd & 3rd images and accompanying text of the poem in SPEKTRO were printed in reverse order.  FIXED now!)

After that, we have "THE OVAL PORTRAIT". This was text with only a single illustration, so by my definition, is NOT an "illustrated story".  However, as I had already replaced the Portuguese text with English text, I'm going to leave it here (for now).

As with SPEKTRO #2, I'm going to present this with the original English text re-formatted to fit the art.  Enjoy!

"THE MURDERS IN THE RUE MORGUE"

     (Conclusion)

The 4th and final story in the Pendulum Press book was the classic mystery...

"THE MURDERS IN THE RUE MORGUE"

This was the 10th version of the story, following...

Milano Libri's LINUS #39 (Jun'68),

Ibero Mundial's DOSSIER NEGRO #41 (Oct'72),

ILLUSTRATED CLASSICS (Jan'75),
Warren's CREEPY #70 (Apr'75),
and Maisal's TERROR CLASICO MAISAL #? (1977)
...the last a few months earlier.

At 31 pages, this clocks in as the second-longest adaptation of this story yet.
(Yes-- it's taking 3 whole blog pages.)

The artist for this one is E.R. Cruz.  Though never a favorite of mine, he must be the most ubiquitous of the 4 Phillipine artists represented in this volume.  In the 1970s, it seemed you couldn't read comics without tripping over his work.  Apart from several issues of DC's THE SHADOW, he also did a TON of stories for Warren.
