Poe 1969, Pt. 5

(Continued from Poe 1969, Pt. 4)

LINUS 50
"LA CADUTA DELLA CASA DEGLI USHER"

     (IN COLOR  w/ English Translation)

Milano Libri Edizione was a publisher in Italy active in the 1960s & 70sLINUS was possibly the 1st all-comics magazine published in Italy, and contained, among its features, PEANUTS, BARNEY GOOGLE, LI'L ABNER, POGO, B.C., THE WIZARD OF ID, POPEYE, as well as numerous features original to Italy.

Among them were a number of Edgar Allan Poe adaptations.

3rd in line...

"THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER".

This was the 10th comics version of this story, following...
Charlton's YELLOWJACKET COMICS #4 (Dec'44),
Gilberton's CLASSICS ILLUSTRATED #40 (Aug'47),
Register & Tribune's THE SPIRIT (Aug'48),
EC's THE VAULT OF HORROR #13 (Jun-Jul'50),
Prize's BLACK MAGIC #28 (Jan-Feb'54),
EC's TERROR ILLUSTRATED #1 (Nov'Dec'55),
Taika's ALBUM CLASSICOS DE TERROR #5 (1967),
Serg's 3 HISTOIRES EXTRAORDINAIRES (1968), and
Warren's EERIE #20 (Mar'69)
...the last one only 2 months earlier.

The art is by Dino Battaglia (1 August 1923 – 4 October 1983), an Italian comic artist, noted for a distinctive and expressive style, best known for his visual adaptations of classic novels.

Between 1968 and 1981, Battaglia did a series of 10 Poe adaptations,
8 of which appeared in LINUS,
the remaining 2 in the large-format CORRIERE DEI PICCOLI.

Until 2006, Battaglia held the record for having done the most Poe adaptations by a single comics artist.  2nd place was tied at 9 apiece by Gahan Wilson (in 1990), Bill D. Fountain (in 1995) and Horacio Lalia (between 1998 and 1999).

Fellow fan Ron Harris was the one who first steered me to Battaglia's work, and I believe he also sent me the complete scans of the 1999 reprint book, which contained the 8 LINUS stories.  (I had to BUY the other 2 magazines myself, to be able to do hi-res scans of the original 2-color printing.)

The translation on this proved much simpler than usual.  There were only a few places where I elected to go back and use the authentic Poe text.  This included the final line of the story.

This was his 2nd of 10 Poe adaptations.

ENJOY!

Poe 1969, Pt. 4

(Continued from Poe 1969, Pt. 3)

EL MONJE LOCO  74
"LOS DIENTES DE BERENICE"

(IN COLOR  w/ English Translation  /  Part 2)

EL MONJE LOCO ("The Mad Monk") could be described as Mexico's version of EC's horror hosts-- except, he predated them by quite a few years.  Created by Luis de Llano Palmer (1918-2012), the character debuted on a radio show in 1937, before spinning off into feature films, and comic-books.

Among them stories were a number of Edgar Allan Poe adaptations.

Second up...

     "BERENICE"

This was the 4th comics version of this, following...
Outubro's CLASSICOS OF TERROR #8 (1962),
Warren's EERIE #11 (Sep'67), and
Taika's ALBUM CLASSICOS DE TERROR #6 (1968)
...the latter about a year earlier.

As with the previous El Monje Loco POE adaptation, this one has been "updated" to the modern day, as evidenced by the clothing fashions and automobiles.  I suppose one can take this as evidence that POE stories are "timeless".

The art is by Carlos Moro.

This was his 1st of 3 POE adaptations.

The first half of this adaptation was mostly NEW material, in the manner of the Roger Moore SAINT tv series, where a short story that may have had enough for 30 minutes of film was padded out to 50Berenice's admirer Leslie, who was in love with her but dies so abruptly, tragically, and stupidly, was an entirely new addition created for this comic-book version.

Apparently, he serves as an "explanation" for Berenice's SUDDEN illness (for which there was no warning in Poe's original story).  This is much in the tradition of the 1928 silent film "THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER", where the film-maker combined the story with "THE OVAL PORTRAIT" in order to provide an explanation for Madeline taking ill.

From here, the story continues more-or-less as Poe wrote it.  Except for the climax, which shows in gruesome detail what Poe only hinted at.

Enjoy!  ...IF YOU CAN.

Revistas Populares was a publisher in Mexico active in the 1960s & 70s.

EL MONJE LOCO ("The Mad Monk") could be described as Mexico's version
of EC's horror hosts-- except, he predated them by quite a few years.  Created by Luis de Llano Palmer (1918-2012), the character debuted on a radio show in 1937.  Like EC's later "Vault Keeper", he wore a robe with a hood over his head, and introduced and/or narrated countless horror tales.  His famous catch-phrase was, "Nadie sabe, nadie supo" ("No one knows, no one knew"), immortalized by the cavernous voice of Salvador Carrasco.

Over time, he was spun off into feature films, and comic-books.  MANY comic-books!!!

Among them stories were a number of Edgar Allan Poe adaptations.
