Poe 1969, Pt. 6

(Continued from Poe 1969, Pt. 5)

MINI TERROR  132
"LA CASA DE USHER"

     (
IN COLOR  w/ English Translation)

Editorial Argumentos, S.A. was a publisher in Mexico, active in the 1960s to the 1980s.  One of the things they specialized in was mini-comics.  Much smaller than digests, these books were 2-7/8" x 4-1/2", small enough to fit in your shirt pocket!

A popular series from them was MINI TERROR, an anthology that ran from 1966-82 for at least 839 issues.  As you might have guessed, among them were several POE adaptations!

First up:

"THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER"

This was the 11th comics version of this story, following...
Charlton's YELLOWJACKET COMICS #4 (Dec'44),
Gilberton's CLASSICS ILLUSTRATED #40 (Aug'47),
Register & Tribune's THE SPIRIT (Aug'48),
EC's THE VAULT OF HORROR #13 (Jun-Jul'50),
Prize's BLACK MAGIC #28 (Jan-Feb'54),
EC's TERROR ILLUSTRATED #1 (Nov'Dec'55),
Taika's ALBUM CLASSICOS DE TERROR #5 (1967),
Serg's 3 HISTOIRES EXTRAORDINAIRES (1968), and
Warren's EERIE #20 (Mar'69), and
Milano Libri Edizioni's LINUS #50 (May'69)
...the previous one earlier this same month!

I had already acquired 2 of these books when Cecilio Gonzalez in Mexico found this on February 17, 2020.  He bought it, and didn't want to sell it to me, but said he's send me HIGH-RES scans.  What a guy!

I like the style of the art, I can tell Juan Reyes put a lot of work into this.  Unfortunately, because it was SHRUNK down to such a small size when printed, the linework got very broken-up and fuzzy.  The way around this was for me to go the completely-insane route... and RE-INK all the faces (and a lot of the figures) in the entire book.  Doing so caused this to become the single MOST time-consuming story thus far in this entire Poe project.  I finally finished it on February 2, 2022.

As it turns out, while Dell Comics never adapted Roger Corman's version of the story, THIS obscure foreign mini-comic DOES!  This is obvious early-on, when the visitor to the mansion is there to see Madelina, and has never met her brother Rodrigo before.

ENJOY!
