"LOS DIENTES DE BERENICE"
(IN COLOR w/ English Translation / Part 2)
EL MONJE LOCO ("The Mad Monk") could be described as Mexico's version of EC's horror hosts-- except, he predated them by quite a few years. Created by Luis de Llano Palmer (1918-2012), the character debuted on a radio show in 1937, before spinning off into feature films, and comic-books.
Among them stories were a number of Edgar Allan Poe adaptations.
Second up...
"BERENICE"
This was the 4th comics version of this, following...
Outubro's CLASSICOS OF TERROR #8 (1962),
Warren's EERIE #11 (Sep'67), and
Taika's ALBUM CLASSICOS DE TERROR #6 (1968)
...the latter about a year earlier.
As with the previous El Monje Loco POE adaptation, this one has been "updated" to the modern day, as evidenced by the clothing fashions and automobiles. I suppose one can take this as evidence that POE stories are "timeless".
The art is by Carlos Moro.
This was his 1st of 3 POE adaptations.
The first half of this adaptation was mostly NEW material, in the manner of the Roger Moore SAINT tv series, where a short story that may have had enough for 30 minutes of film was padded out to 50. Berenice's admirer Leslie, who was in love with her but dies so abruptly, tragically, and stupidly, was an entirely new addition created for this comic-book version.
Apparently, he serves as an "explanation" for Berenice's SUDDEN illness (for which there was no warning in Poe's original story). This is much in the tradition of the 1928 silent film "THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER", where the film-maker combined the story with "THE OVAL PORTRAIT" in order to provide an explanation for Madeline taking ill.
From here, the story continues more-or-less as Poe wrote it. Except for the climax, which shows in gruesome detail what Poe only hinted at.
