Poe 1969, Pt. 7

(Continued from Poe 1969, Pt. 6)

I CLASSICI A FUMETTI  17
"IL CUORE RIVELATORE"

     (IN COLOR  w/ English Translation)

Gino Sansoni Editore was a publisher in Italy active in the 1960s & 70s.

Like Société Parisienne d'Édition's MONDIAL AVENTURES in France, Sansoni's I CLASSICI A FUMETTI was an attempt to emulate the success and subject matter of Gilberton's wildly-successful CLASSICS ILLUSTRATED.  The series was done in a tiny digest format, in B&W, with 2-3 panels per page.  It appears to have run at least 28 issues from 1967-70, and included a number of adapations not done in Gilberton's entire run.  Many of the stories focused on beautiful, sexy women, something reflected in most of their covers.

Among them were a number of Edgar Allan Poe adaptations.

Third in line...

     "THE TELL-TALE HEART"

This was the 9th comics version of this story, following...
Charlton's YELLOWJACKET COMICS #6 (Dec'45),
EC's THE HAUNT OF FEAR #15 [1] (May-Jun'50),
Gilberton's CLASSICS ILLUSTRATED #84 (Jun'51),
EC's SHOCK SUSPENSTORIES #8 (Apr-May'53),
EC's THE HAUNT OF FEAR #20 (Jul-Aug'53),
Charlton's WIN A PRIZE #1 (Feb'55),
Warren's CREEPY #3 (Jun'65), and
Taika's ALBUM CLASSICOS DE TERROR #7 (1968), and
    ...the last 5 months earlier.

The art was by Gino Dauro, who did a lot of work in both France and ItalyDaro's simple, straightforward style that focused entirely on storytelling might make him Italy's answer to Dick Ayers.  (I know that's a stretch, but I enjoy doing such things.)

This was his 3rd of 4 Poe adaptations.

I have to admit.  I did not enjoy processing this one.  I suppose maybe I'm getting tired of dealing with far too many versions of the SAME stories.  But in this case, it's also the unmittigated nerve of them to do 2 such similar stories ("The Black Cat" and "The Tell-Tale Heart") back-to-back in the same book.  It reminds me of what The CBS Late Movie used to do-- rerun 2 or more similar stories back-to-back, as if they were determined to point out how repetitive they were to their audience.  Sheesh!

Although there were some minor changes, I was able to use some of the original POE text here and there-- notably, as the beginning and end of the story.  ENJOY!
