Poe 1969, Pt. 10

(Continued from Poe 1969, Pt. 9)

I CLASSICI A FUMETTI  17
"IL GATTO NERO"

     (IN COLOR  w/ English Translation)

Gino Sansoni Editore was a publisher in Italy active in the 1960s & 70s.

Like Société Parisienne d'Édition's MONDIAL AVENTURES in France, Sansoni's I CLASSICI A FUMETTI was an attempt to emulate the success and subject matter of Gilberton's wildly-successful CLASSICS ILLUSTRATED.  The series was done in a tiny digest format, in B&W, with 2-3 panels per page.  It appears to have run at least 28 issues from 1967-70, and included a number of adapations not done in Gilberton's entire run.  Many of the stories focused on beautiful, sexy women, something reflected in most of their covers.

Among them were a number of Edgar Allan Poe adaptations.

Second in line...

     "THE BLACK CAT"

This was the 8th version of the story, following...
Charlton's YELLOWJACKET COMICS #1 (Sep'44),
EC's THE HAUNT OF FEAR #15 [1] (May-Jun'50),
St. John's NIGHTMARE #12 (Apr'54),
Outubro's CLASSICOS DE TERROR #14 (1961),
Dell's Movie Classic TALES OF TERROR (Feb'63),
Taika's PAGINAS SINISTRAS #3 (1966)
Novaro's VIDAS ILUSTRES #195 (Oct'68),
...the latter only 11 months earlier!

The art was by Gino Dauro, who did a lot of work in both France and ItalyDaro's simple, straightforward style that focused entirely on storytelling might make him Italy's answer to Dick Ayers.  (I know that's a stretch, but I enjoy doing such things.)

This was his 2nd of 4 Poe adaptations.

This version of this popular story appears to have been somewhat inspired by the Richard Matheson-Roger Corman film.  The drunkard bears a recognizable likeness to Peter Lorre, and he's generally nasty to his wife and his neighbors.  However, apart from that, it sticks to Poe's story MUCH more than the film did.  Much of the text I used was straight out of the translator program, although in a few cases I had to figure out what some words meant, and here and there I managed to include some authentic Poe.  This includes the FINAL line of the story, which I added entirely on my own.  The includion of the line is in keeping with the tradition of the Corman POE films.

This was originally posted on Tuesday, December 12, 2017.  For the sake of organization, it has been moved to this new location on 1-1-2021.
