LES AVENTURES DE GORDON PYM
(IN COLOR w/ English Translation / Part 2)
Collection LeRuban Rouge is an imprint of Librairie Arthème Fayard in France.
In 1948, apparently, they published the very first heavily-illustrated story book version of Edgar Allan Poe's only novel...
"THE NARRATIVE OF ARTHUR GORDON PYM OF NANTUCKET"
It seemed an obvious place to place a break after Arthur & Augustus' drunken misadventure in the sailboat. Incredibly, that was only Chapter 1 out of 25 in Poe's novel. Which means this illustrated book has to cram the remaining 24 chapters in. We'll see how this goes. As the book's in French, I'm reading it one page at a time while I do the English translation.
In the "Preface", French book editor Jacques de Lacretelle talked about the 1948 adaptation keeping "Poe's message" while "alleviating it of the apparatus of a century". In other words, updating the style to make it modern. Perhaps he would have been confused, or worse, by the way that, as I translate the French into English, I'm going out of my way to incorporate as much actual, authentic 1838 Poe narration from the original novel as I can possibly use and squeeze in!
In some cases, as with the nautical terminology, the words and phrases used by Poe may be either so specific to sea-goers, or so ANTIQUATED, that many, if not most, modern readers may have scarce idea what is being talked about, without looking up half the words. I admit-- that includes ME! Despite this, I like the idea of using the original words, as it makes it a real time capsule of the era. And, if anyone becomes better educated on the teminology and turns of phrase along the way, all the better.
ENJOY!
