Poe 1964, Pt. 4

(Continued from Poe 1964, Pt. 3)

COURRIERE DEI PICCOLI  1964 23 & 24
"LO SCARABEO D'ORO"

     (Illustrated Story)

Corriere Della Sera was an Italian newspaper publisher who included a color comic-book magazine supplement in their Sunday papers.  On occasion, they would do adaptations of "Classics", or feature illustrated versions of the original texts.  Which brings us to...

     "THE GOLD BUG"

This was the 7th comics version of this story, following David C. Cook's SUNDAY PIX #1-14 (May 1-July 31, 1949), Gilberton's CLASSICS ILLUSTRATED #84 (Jun'51), Boy Scouts Of America's BOYS' LIFE (Jul'54), Empresa Nacional de Publicidade's CAVALEIRO ANDANTE #453 (Sep'60), Editorial Sea/Novaro's TESORO DE CUENTOS CLASICOS #51 (Nov'61), and Thorpe & Porter's CLASSICS ILLUSTRATED #84 (Jul'62), the last some 23 months earlier.

When I saw the fully-painted art of G. RENNA, I just knew I had to include this in the POE project!

Indirectly, I have fellow fan Ron Harris to thank for my finding this.  He pointed me toward the adaptations of Italian artist Dino Battaglia, who had done 10 POE adaptations-- 2 of which appeared in COURRIERE DEI PICCOLO.  Those 2 haven't turned up yet-- but this one did!

I didn't see much point in doing an English translation and/or text reformatting on this one.  To read the original story in English, click HERE.

CLASSICS ILLUSTRATED  84  (UK)
"THE GOLD BUG"

     (Conclusion)

Thorpe & Porter was an English publisher who licensed Gilberton's immensely-successful CLASSICS ILLUSTRATED.  Aside from doing UK editions of the US stories, they also on occasion published issues that were NEW for their run of the series, which had never been published in America!  Which brings us to this rather obscure comic...

     "THE GOLD BUG"

This was the 6th comics version of this story, following David C. Cook's SUNDAY PIX #1-14 (May 1-July 31, 1949), Gilberton's CLASSICS ILLUSTRATED #84 (Jun'51), Boy Scouts Of America's BOYS' LIFE (Jul'54), Empresa Nacional de Publicidade's CAVALEIRO ANDANTE #453 (Sep'60), and Editorial Sea/Novaro's TESORO DE CUENTOS CLASICOS #51 (Nov'61), the last one 8 months earlier.

The artist is Mick Anglo, who's most well-known as the creator of "Marvelman", the single most popular and successful superhero ever published in England.  His art is a bit "stiff", and reminds me of quite a few comics artists from, the 1980s, but he serves the story well enough.

A special thanks to fellow fan Don Bearden, without whom I might never have heard about this book.

CLASSICS ILLUSTRATED  84  (UK)
"THE GOLD BUG"

     (Part 2)

Thorpe & Porter was an English publisher who licensed Gilberton's immensely-successful CLASSICS ILLUSTRATED.  Their editions were virtually identical in appearance, except for the different price listed on the covers, and the fact that they published the stories in a completely-different sequence than they had been in America.

However, they also on occasion published issues that were NEW for their run of the series, which had never been published in America!  Which brings us to this rather obscure comic...

     "THE GOLD BUG"

This was the 5th comics version of this story, following David C.

Created as a replacement for "Captain Marvel" when Fawcett decided to get out of the comics biz, the series ran for 346 issues!

A special thanks to fellow fan Don Bearden, without whom I might never have heard about this book.  Don's specialty is "Classics" comics of all varieties, and has supplied me with several entire stories for this project I had been completely unaware of.

However, they also on occasion published issues that were NEW for their run of the series, which had never been published in America!  Which brings us to this rather obscure comic...

     "THE GOLD BUG"

Gilberton had tackled POE in CI #17 (Jan'44), #18 (Mar'44), #21 (Jul'44), #40 (Aug'47), and #84 (Jun'51).  Most of those stories had been reprinted multiple times, had countless foreign editions published, and are still IN PRINT from a variety of licensors to this day!  But the original American series had not done any new POE material since 1951.  It strikes me as a bit odd that Thorpe & Porter decided to do "THE GOLD BUG", since that had already been done by Gilberton 11 YEARS earlier!

This was the 6th comics version of this story, following David C. Cook's SUNDAY PIX #1-14 (May 1-July 31, 1949), Gilberton's CLASSICS ILLUSTRATED #84 (Jun'51), Boy Scouts Of America's BOYS' LIFE (Jul'54), Empresa Nacional de Publicidade's CAVALEIRO ANDANTE #453 (Sep'60), and Editorial Sea/Novaro's TESORO DE CUENTOS CLASICOS #51 (Nov'61), the last one only 8 months earlier.
