Jules Verne, Part 10

(Continued from Part 9)

Annoying, 2 out of the last 4 Sunday sections were (as of 4-3-2014) MISSING.  Fortunately they've turned up since, although some episodes are still only in B&W.

Here we go...  20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA
Adaptation by Frank A. Reilly  /  art by JESSE MARSH
"And now-- the epic conclusion..."

 019  /  12-5-54
Initially MISSING, I've now found a hi-res 3-tier color version.
020  /  12-12-54
While adding 2 panels from the alternate format, both in B&W, I noticed that, at least in this case, nearly every panel in the 3-tier format had more art that was cropped off the edges in the 2-tier format.
021  /  12-19-54
Initially MISSING, I've now found a hi-res 3-tier color version,
and the 2 "extra" panels from a 3-tier B&W version.
This sequence looks like it may have inspired part of the climax of the
Roger Moore "007" film, THE SPY WHO LOVED ME.
022  /  12-26-54
Well, at least I do have the FINAL episode of the story...
...even if it is only in B&W.

Jules Verne, Part 9

(Continued from Part 8)

Annoying, 4 out of the last 8 Sunday sections are (as of 4-1-2014) MISSING.  But I'm going to finish setting these up anyway, and hope that the rest turns up eventually.

We pick up some time after the battle with the giant squid.  It's at this point that the last half-hour or so of the 1954 feature film completely deviates from Verne's novel "20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA", and instead, utilizes the climax of a similar but entirely unrelated Verne novel, "AGAINST ALL FLAGS" !!  That's "Hollywood" for you.  They love to "mix and match".

Here we go...  20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA
Adaptation by Frank Reilly  /  art by JESSE MARSH
"Our story continues..."

015  /  11-7-54
Initially I had a hi-res 2-tier color version.
Now I've found a 3-tier B&W version,
and have been able to add the 2 "extra" panels.

016  /  11-14-54
This was initially missing. Now I have a 3-tier B&W version.
As a bonus, here's a low-quality version in French.
017  /  11-21-54
This was initially missing. Now I have a 3-tier B&W version.
As a bonus, here's a HORRIBLE color scan from eBay!
018  /  11-28-54
I'm posting the low-res French version so you can see where the art in some panels has either been expanded for this format, or, cropped for the other format.  Who can say for sure?
Here's the English version...

Jules Verne, Part 8

(Continued from Part 7)

This got more frustrating as it went.  3 out of the next 5 installments were initially MISSING.  This included the entire battle with the GIANT SQUID, which is virtually the centerpiece of every version of this story, including most book covers and promotional artwork.  But I set the pages up anyway, in the hope that the rest would turn up eventually.  And they DID!

Here we go...  20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA
Adaptation by Frank Reilly  /  art by JESSE MARSH
"Our story continues..."

010  /  10-3-54
I started out with a hi-res 2-tier version.  I then found a much BIGGER hi-res 2-tier version, and, a low-res 3-tier B&W version, which allowed me to add 2 extra panels.

011  /  10-10-54
I was missing this one originally;  now I have a low-res 3-tier version, in B&W.
Interestingly enough, after multiple times seeing the film, it never crossed my mind there may have been a direct connection with Ned's tossing out the messages and the appearance of the warship in this scene.
012  /  10-17-54
Another one where I started out with a hi-res 2-tier version,
then found a low-res 3-tier B&W version,
which allowed me to add the 2 additional panels.

As a bonus, here's a French version of this same scene.
013  /  10-24-54
The battle with the giant squid was initially completely missing!
Later, though, I managed to find both a hi-res 2-tier version
and a low-res B&W 3-tier version with the 2 "extra" panels.
014  /  10-31-54
The 2nd half of the battle with the giant squid was also initially missing.
I found a 3-tier B&W version, and also a 2-tier color version,
but unfortunately the color version was very low quality.

As a bonus, here's the low-res color version.
